Brett Rosenberg: pop songwriter, record-maker, subway busker, guitar hero. Since 2001, he's made fine power-pop records with and without his band, The Brett Rosenberg Problem, who wowed Boston as a ragged, rootsy, imaginative vision of late 70's power pop. Brett and his band placed third in the 2004 WBCN Boston Rock-N-Roll Rumble. Rosenberg opened name acts like John Doe of X, Of Montreal, Damien Rice, Josh Ritter, Nikki Sudden, and many more.
These days, Rosenberg, 27, finds himself touring and embracing playful, personal sounds on his latest Drop Dead Air, a varied collection that owes more to Elliott Smith and Lindsay Buckingham than the Replacements or Elvis Costello. Drop Dead Air is an old-school singer-songwriter record with big hooks and a bare, sad/funny lyrical approach that transcends its creator's boyish looks. The independently released CD has garnered positive press reviews as well as college and commercial airplay throughout the US.
What else does this Rosenberg do? He's a guitar hero of the first order, sporting an instinctive, jagged style that has been likened to Alex Chilton and Nils Lofgren. Rosenberg plays guitar for The Rudds, John Powhida's rock-n-soul buzz band that melds the hooky rock of Cheap Trick with the experimental soul of Prince and Hall and Oates. The band has been nominated for three Boston Music Awards and opened for The Flaming Lips. When asked, he hops on a plane and plays some 2nd guitar for The Figgs, a hooky rock-n-roll band with a rich discography spanning two decades and a rabid cult following. He appears on the second half of their recent release, Continue to Enjoy the Figgs. In 2005, Rosenberg played guitar on Graham Parker's US tour. He appears on Graham's latest live disc, 103 Degrees in June. Recently, he handled lead guitar duties for rocker/ex-model/bestselling author Bebe Buell for her birthday celebration at Manhattan's Cutting Room, sharing cake and dodging paparazzi with the likes of Jimmy Fallon (who admired Brett's guitar-work) and Bebe's daughter, actress Liv Tyler afterwards.
Rosenberg has also played in legendary sportswriter Peter Gammons' blues band, The Hot Stove All-Stars. Rosenberg got his start as a sideman in 2001 when he provided guitar for ex-Shods member and sometime Mighty Mighty Bosstones keyboardist Dave Aaronoff.
Rosenberg has been nominated for three Boston Music Awards and has made regional radio and television appearances. Recently, his 2002 effort, Destroyer received a late boost when "My Girlfriend's Daughter" was featured heavily on Pandora.com user-created stations.
